ORDER OF SERVICE

  • CALL TO WORSHIP
Hosanna to the Son of David, the King of Israel. Blessed is he who comes in the Name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest.

Assist us mercifully with your help, O Lord God of our salvation that we may enter with joy upon the contemplation of those mighty acts, whereby you have given us life and immortality; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

This morning begins the Great Week of the Christian Year. During Lent we have been preparing by works of love and self-sacrifice for the celebration of the Lord’s death and resurrection. With Christians throughout the world, we come together this week to call to mind, and to express in word and action, the center of the mystery hid for generations but revealed to us: to us, God has chosen to make known the glorious riches of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory.

Christ entered in triumph into the Holy City to complete his work as Messiah: to suffer, to die and to rise to new life. Today we commit ourselves to walk the way of the cross, so that, sharing his sufferings, we may be united with him in his risen life.

We praise you, Almighty God, for the acts of love by which you have redeemed us through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. On this day he entered the holy city of Jerusalem  in triumph, and was hailed as king by those who spread their garments and branches of palm along his way. May these branches be for us signs of his victory. Grant that we who bear them in his name may ever hail him as our King, and follow him in the way that leads to eternal life. Amen.

Hosanna to the Son of David, the King of Israel. Blessed is he who comes in the Name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest.

  • PRAYER OF CONFESSION
Please sit or kneel and pray aloud the words that are printed here.

All: Almighty and most merciful Father, we have erred and strayed from your ways like lost sheep. We have followed too much the devices and desires of our own hearts. We have offended against your holy laws. We have left undone those things which we ought to have done, and we have done those things which we ought not to have done; and apart from your grace, there is no health in us. O Lord, have mercy upon us. Spare all those who confess their faults. Restore all those who are penitent, according to your promises declared to all people in Christ Jesus our Lord. And grant, O most merciful Father, for his sake, that we may now live a godly, righteous, and sober-minded life, to the glory of your holy Name. Amen.
