February 1, 2008 On behalf of Lucas and our families, thank you to all of you who have supported us in the aftermath of the tragedy that took Midi and Nathan. We have been overwhelmed by the kindness, generosity, and acts of service that so many of you have showered on us. While we are comforted by the fact that they are with God and that their eternal future is secure, we mourn deeply. For we are still here, living in this fallen world. And we face our present and future knowing that our lives will always bear this pain. I am the most grateful for God himself. The presence of the Holy Spirit with me has been undeniable. While each day has been marked by heavy mourning, I have also experienced the peace that only the Spirit can give. I can testify boldly that He is walking through this with me. I have never felt abandoned. Please continue to pray for us, especially Lucas who recently started showing signs of his suffering. January 5, 2008 On Behalf of the Mikasa and Kim Family, We would like to extend our sincere gratitude to the City of Carson, the Sheriff’s Department, Harbor UCLA Medical Center and our loving family and friends. We are overwhelmed by the huge outpouring of sympathy we received following the tragic accident that took the lives of our beloved Midi and Nathan Mikasa. We would like to take this opportunity to share with everyone about how our family remembers Midi and Nathan. Midi was born on October 29, 1973 as Millie Kim and grew up in the South Bay. She went to high school in Rolling Hills High School, and graduated from UCLA in 1995 with a Bachelor’s Degree in English. She was involved with InterVarsity Christian Fellowship at UCLA, and served as an intern with them after college. She also spent one year in Korea working with the Doorae Community, a rural Christian community meeting the needs of the poor and others who were suffering. She served on many missions trips over the years, including ones to Indonesia (where she helped on a medical team after the tsunami), East Palo Alto, and Russia. She worked for several years at Business Funds in LA, and went back to school for a nursing degree from USC in 2002. As a nurse, Midi worked at Providence St. Joseph Medical Center in Burbank and the UCLA Center for Vaccine Research. Most recently she was working at The Burke Group. Midi and her family were also very involved in their church, Fountain of Life Covenant Church in Long Beach.
Midi was an amazing person who was molded by her relationship with Jesus Christ. She was the kindest, humblest, most generous person that many of us have ever met. She touched many lives with her love. She was a loving wife, daughter, mother, sister, cousin, and friend who sought to help and be a friend to others whom she saw suffering.
Midi married Mark Mikasa on June 2, 2001. Nathan and twin brother Lucas were born on Dec 1, 2003. They had just celebrated their 4th birthday and were looking forward to a lifetime of adventures together. Nathan, like his mom, always had a smile on his face and had the most infectious laughter. Nathan was incredibly gifted. From the age of 2 he loved doing puzzles all by himself. Recently he was excited about riding his new bicycle and learning how to read. He was a loving brother, son, and grandson who will be missed by all. We are thankful both Mark and Lucas have been released from the hospital and are at home. We take comfort in knowing Midi and Nathan are in Heaven with Jesus, watching over them. Please keep them in your prayers and honor their memory by loving others as they so wonderfully modeled for us over the years.
